Orientation to an informatics department is a complicated process. Learning the systems used and how to support them is just the beginning of a long learning process. Studies have shown that a mentoring program for colleagues who are new to a position improves job satisfaction and decreases turnover. This session will demonstrate methods that can be used to assess current competencies to identify areas to focus on for development.

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to articulate an
orientation plan that includes a balance of validating informatics and
organization-specific competencies and apply Benner's novice to expert
theory.
