Structured query language (SQL) is the language used to extract data from databases in most health information systems today, including electronic health record systems. Part 1 of this workshop is intended for the person with no experience with databases or SQL. Learn how to use DESCRIBE, SELECT, and WHERE to perform simple queries; describe the difference between * and wildcard characters and correctly use them; use pattern matching with LIKE, NOT LIKE, and =; use Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT; perform basic mathematical functions with SQL; and lastly, use JOIN to combine data from two tables. R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows, and MacOS. Part 2 of this workshop is intended for the person with no experience with R or its graphical user interface R studio. Learn how to install R and R studio and different R packages; create a data matrix in R; load a dataset into R; explore a dataset in R; create new calculated variables and recode data; generate a frequency; conduct simple statistical tests; and utilize the R package “ggplot” to generate visualizations.
