Carolyn S. Harmon PhD, DNP, RN, NI-BC, CSSGB, FAAN

Carolyn S. Harmon, PhD, DNP, RN, NI-BC, CSSGB, FAAN, is a nationally recognized leader in nursing informatics, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital health innovation. She serves as Professor and Director of Healthcare Leadership and Nursing Informatics at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing, where she also holds appointments as a Nurse Scientist with the ACORN Center, a Propel AI Scholar, and a Provost’s AI Teaching Fellow. Dr. Harmon’s work advances the integration of informatics, data science, and AI across nursing practice, education, leadership, and policy. Her scholarship centers on AI literacy, responsible and ethical innovation, clinical decision support, and digital health transformation, with a sustained focus on preparing the nursing workforce to lead in technology-enabled healthcare environments. Through her research, teaching, and national service, she contributes to shaping evidence-based, human-centered approaches to emerging technologies in healthcare. A respected national leader in professional organizations, Dr. Harmon is Past President of the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA). She currently leads the Artificial Intelligence Subgroup and co-chairs the Policy and Advocacy Workgroup for the Nursing Knowledge Big Data Science Initiative, contributing to interdisciplinary efforts that advance nursing knowledge, data science, and technology-enabled practice. Her leadership reflects a longstanding commitment to strengthening the voice of nursing in informatics policy, standards development, and innovation strategy. Dr. Harmon brings both scholarly depth and applied expertise to her work. She is ANCC Board Certified in Nursing Informatics, AI fundamentals certified, and holds a Six Sigma Green Belt certification, integrating systems thinking, quality improvement, and informatics science to improve healthcare outcomes and organizational performance. She is also an Amy V. Cockcroft Leadership Fellow, further demonstrating her commitment to academic and professional leadership excellence.
