Planning is a critical component of the nursing process, according to the American Nurses Association (ANA) (n.d.). System downtimes are a fact of life, they are inevitable according to Ng (2014), and are important enough for the Health Incident Command System (HICS) to include as a crucial factor in maintaining patient care (HICS, n.d.). Planning for system downtime is an important responsibility of the informatics nurse and includes procedures and access to information during downtime, downtime forms, and processes once the system is back up.
