Patricia A. Abbott PhD

Associate Professor and Director of the Hillman Scholars Program in Nursing Innovation, University of Michigan School of Nursing

Dr. Patti Abbott is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Hillman Scholars Program in Nursing Innovation at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. Patti has been “around the block” a few times, so many ANIA members may know her from the University of Maryland and the Johns Hopkins Schools of Nursing. She began teaching nursing informatics in 1996 and has never looked back. She was one of the authors of the original Scope and Standards for Informatics Nursing and helped to write the first ANCC Informatics Nursing certification exam in the early 1990’s. She honors those who have continued this work in the rapidly changing digital environment in which we practice. Patti continues to teach and research in the informatics space and is quite interested in how people use technology to meet a need. This has branched into involvement with major efforts underway to improve the usability of HIT and to (finally) acknowledge the true impact of sub-optimal HIT on clinician stress and well-being.
