Andrea Stokes Underwood is a family nurse practitioner certified through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). She currently is employed as a family nurse practitioner in emergency medicine at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. She has 10 years nursing experience in the areas of intermediate care unit, coronary care unit, post-anesthesia care unit, emergency department, national surgical quality improvement program, and regional anesthesia.
Andrea's career as a family nurse practitioner has been utilized in areas of family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and emergency medicine. In addition to her clinic background in nursing, Andrea has been involved with many committees to improve surgical care including Surgical Improvement-Preoperative Risk Factors, Six Sigma- DVT Prophylaxis, Surgical Services Improvement Project , and the Six Sigma- Developer of Surgical Clinical Questionnaire to improve data collection among patients. She has been awarded the title outstanding nursing student, is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, and is a member of the Alpha Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda. She also holds professional memberships at the state and national levels. Andrea received her associate degree of nursing from Surry Community College in 2000, her bachelor’s of nursing from Winston Salem State University in 2008, and her master’s of science in nursing from Winston Salem State University in 2010. Andrea currently holds a doctorate of nursing practice from Indiana State University (ISU) as of May 4, 2013.
Andrea's capstone project at ISU focused on the obesity epidemic in her community with a specific focus on the rural obese middle age female. The obesity project with the utilization of community leaders and the Eat Smart Move More Weigh Less program proved to be successful in the obesity epidemic in her rural community. She recently co-authored the article “Development of a Social Networking Site for Patients and Families: A Doctoral Level Nursing Informatics Project,” which was publication in the February 2013 issue of Online Journal of Nursing Informatics.
