This workshop introduces attendees to workflow redesign and identifies pre- and post-implementation strategies to improve quality for implementation of EHRs. Attendees use national best practice templates emphasizing meaningful use measures, review real-world case studies, and outline methods to measure current state versus future state improvements.

Objectives:

  • Discuss how workflow redesign relates to achieving meaningful use of electronic health records and ties to the scope of the establishment of the nationwide health information network in the US.
  • Discuss how workflow redesign is one tool within the toolbox of quality improvement for health care and how workflow redesign fits within a quality improvement modality.
  • Utilize best practices developed under the ONC Communities of Practice (CoPs) on common workflows in achieving meaningful use of EHRs through the evaluation of current state practices, creation/implementation of future state interventions, and subsequent optimization of workflows.
  • Solve common barriers to achieving meaningful use of EHRs using best practice techniques and quality improvement methodology.
  • Review and address ""real world"" case studies to use best practices and templates reviewed in the workshop to address barriers.
